Crash Kills Smyrna Cop, Driver Charged With Vehicular Homicide

A Smyrna police officer was killed when his cruiser and an SUV collided Monday night. The other driver was charged with homicide by vehicle.

SMYRNA, GA — A Smyrna police officer died Monday night when his cruiser and an SUV collided, according to multiple media outlets.

The officer was identified as Christopher Eric Ewing, 34, a U.S. Air Force veteran who had been with the department for two years. He was married and had three children.

The driver of the other vehicle, Robert Lorenzo Cox, 35, Duluth, was charged with homicide by vehicle, DUI, failure to yield and tampering with evidence, as reported Monday morning by WSB-TV. He was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital to be treated for injuries, according to Smyrna police.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the accident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Oak Drive near Interstate 285. Traffic in the area was tied up for several hours after the accident.

Smyrna police told Fox5 Atlanta that the officer died in the line of duty but didn’t know yet what led up to the crash.
