  1. Dick Yarbrough writes in the opinion-editorial section of the Rockdale Newton Citizen that Cobb County's elected officials are doing wrong to students in less affluent sections of the county. Yarbrough is concerned most by programs proposed by Republican Rep. John Carson, from Marietta, and Cobb County Commissioner Chair Lisa Cupid, would make it easier for families to opt out of sending their children and tax dollars to public schools. "So while Carson encourages running away from public schools and Cupid plays politics with them, Ifunanya Obianwu a graduate of Pebblebrook High School in Mableton, which last time I looked is in south Cobb, is busy shooting the academic lights out and heading to Princeton University this fall on a well-earned scholarship," Yarbrough wrote. (Rockdale Newton Citizen)
  2. Two suspects are still at large, and a Cobb County police officer is injured after a car chase early in the morning of Friday, May 26. Officers pursued suspects in connection to reports of a stolen vehicle near Bentley Road where officers were able to match the description of the vehicle to reports of a car connected to vehicle break-ins in Marietta. An officer who recognized the suspicious vehicle attempted a traffic stop, which led suspects to flee and be pursued by authorities, ultimately resulting in the injury of an officer. Authorities recovered three firearms from the scene and took one suspect into custody, with two more still being sought, and no information released as of Friday afternoon regarding the suspects' identities. 3. Cobb County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Lisa Cupid is slated to deliver Jun. 12's State of the County address at Marquee Monday from 11:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Cupid has previously delivered her address to the public at large on May 4 at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre, and will give her upcoming address at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre. As part of the event, the Cobb Chamber’s Cobb Executive Women program will be presenting the 2023 Woman of Distinction award. (Cobb County Courier)
