Fake iPad Sold in Smyrna Was Piece of Glass

"The fake iPad was equipped with writing including symbols of value and trademarks to give the fake iPad the appeance of being a real iPad," according to Cobb County criminal warrants.

When a man at the Pilot Travel Center at 4600 Atlanta Road handed a woman an iPad last Wednesday, she thought she was holding the real thing.

It had the Apple logo, which was enough to convince the woman to hand over $79.

But investigators with the Cobb County Police Department said there was nothing authentic about the iPad, which was nothing more than "a wrapped up piece of glass."

Marcus D. Thompson and Roger T. Brown, both of Decatur, were arrested Wednesday in connection with the incident. Each man faces charges that include theft by deception and the sale of products with forged trademark or copyrighted design. Brown faces an additional charge of failure to yield left turn.

He allegedly pulled out of the Pilot Travel Center while attempting to make a left turn and blocked all south bound lanes of travel, according to the warrant.

Thompson, the officer wrote in the warrant, is the one who allegedly delivered the fake iPad to the woman and took her money.

While Brown was released on a $2,500 bond, Thompson remains in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center in lieu of $2,500 bond.
