First Day of Spring Is Today

Considering it's March and we're still wearing sweaters and peacoats, winter seems like it's been around forever.

Luckily, a new season is just around the corner, since the first day of spring is Wednesday, March 20.

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, spring starts with the vernal equinox at 7:02 a.m. today. The almanac explains the word "equinox" is Latin for "equal night," which is exactly what spring is: The times for day and night are approximately 12 hours long.

"The Sun crosses the celestial equator going northward; it rises exactly due east and sets exactly due west," continues the website.

So if you're looking forward to more daylight, warmer temperatures and blooming flowers, then grab those flip flops and shorts and head outside.

Don't do it just yet, though, because it's still a bit nippy out there. Even though we had spring weather last weekend, the National Weather Service predicts temperatures will be going down instead of up the rest of the week, and we may even see some flakes in Smyrna and Vinings.

In Smyrna-Vinings, Wednesday's high starts off at 59 degrees with a low of 29 degrees, and Thursday's high is 50 degrees with a 20 percent chance of snow and sleet for the evening with a low of 35 degrees. On Friday, chance of snow increases to 50 percents, with a high of 50 degrees and a low of 42, according to the NWS forecast.
