Make This Halloween A Safe One
Smyrna Fire Rescue wants to remind residents to use extreme caution while having Halloween fun.

by Jason F. Lanyon, Smyrna Fire Chief
Halloween is a cherished tradition but the excitement of the night can cause children to forget to be careful. Here are some things we can do to help make
this Halloween safe for everyone:
- Adults should use extreme caution when driving. Pedestrian traffic will be higher than normal Halloween.
- Plan costumes that are bright and reflective.
- Masks can block eyesight; consider non-toxic makeup or hats as a safer alternative.
- Obtain flashlights for all trick-or-treaters.
- Small children should never carve pumpkins. They can draw a face and let the adult do the cutting.
- A parent or adult should always accompany young children.
- If older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you.
- Only go to well-lit houses and never enter a home or car for a treat.
- Carry a mobile phone for quick communication.
- Though tampering is rare, an adult should closely examine all treats for unwrapped or suspicious items. When in doubt, throw it out.
Halloween is an exciting time, but also a time to be extra vigilant for possible
safety hazards. Have a fun and safe Halloween.
