Smyrna Shooting Suspect Charged With Murder In Man's Killing

A 40-year-old man was found shot to death near the office of an apartment complex in Cobb County.

SMYRNA — The man accused in a fatal Cobb Parkway South shooting Wednesday is now facing murder charges after being arrested in Gwinnett County, Marietta Police said Thursday.

Police said Donovan Carter, 33, of Gwinnett, was arrested early Wednesday night during a traffic stop.

Carter is accused in the fatal shooting of Kenneth Cunningham II, 40, who was shot multiple times and killed at a Cobb Parkway apartment complex, police said.

Police said late Wednesday afternoon the shooting happened around 10:30 a.m., and when officers arrived, they found Cunningham with multiple gunshot wounds on the ground near the office of the complex.

Cunningham, who was a resident at the complex, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The shooting was not a random act of violence, police said. A motive has not been released.

Carter was booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center and was charged on suspicion of aggravated assault, murder commission of a felony, malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, police said.

The Cobb County and Smyrna police departments, as well as the Cobb County Sheriff's Office, assisted with the investigation, police said.
