Ruling Revealed In Death Of U-Haul Driver In Smyrna

Officers were investigating a stolen U-Haul truck when gunfire erupted, killing the truck's driver, police say.

SMYRNA, GA — A ruling was made in the death of a driver fatally shot while police investigated a stolen U-Haul around 6 a.m. Friday at Concord Road and McClinden Avenue.

The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded the death of 46-year-old Marietta resident Darrick Desawn Rooks was caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Smyrna Police said.

During a traffic stop on the U-Haul, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said officers gave Rooks several commands. A gunshot was fired from the U-Haul, and officers shot back, the GBI said.

When officers approached the cab of the U-Haul, the GBI said Rooks was found dead with a gunshot wound.

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
