Smyrna, Cobb's Unemployment Rates Down in September: ICYMI

The statewide unemployment rate held steady at 5.8 percent, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.

September’s unemployment rate in Smyrna and Cobb County for September decreased slightly from August’s figures, data released from the Georgia Department of Labor on Thursday shows.

Smyrna’s unemployment rate between August and September decreased slightly from 4.8 to 4.6 percent, according to preliminary unemployment figures for September. There were 32,298 people in Smyrna’s workforce in September, compared to 32,351 in August. Furthermore, 1,478 Smyrna residents were unemployed in September, compared to 1,555 in August. In September of 2014, Smyrna’s unemployment rate was 5.7 percent.

In Cobb County, the unemployment rate dropped from 5 to 4.9 percent between August and September, the figures show. Some 19,391 Cobb residents were out of work in September, compared to 19,830 in August. In September of 2014, the unemployment rate in Cobb County was 6 percent.

August and September’s statewide unemployment rate of 5.8 percent was the lowest such rate in Georgia since May of 2008, Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said last month in a statement. At this time last year, Georgia’s unemployment rate sat at 6.9 percent.
