Smyrna Downtown Redesign Could Cost $1M Less Than Anticipated

Though the Smyrna City Council approved a roughly $6.5M plan, a design team found that the upgrades could only cost around $5.7M.

SMYRNA, GA — The plan to make over Smyrna's downtown area could cost around $1 million less than officials had anticipated, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The City Council had approved the redesign in June, with a price tag of around $6.5 million.

However, a design team hired to create blueprints for the project found that it may cost only around $5.7 million, according to the Journal-Constitution.

Plans call for replacing the fountain and roundabout at the front of the city's library with a green space and splash pad, building a 250-spot parking deck, extending King Street to Powder Springs Street and adding a stoplight at the corner of Powder Springs Street and Atlanta Road, Patch previously reported.

Though the design team put a $5.7 million price tag on the project, city council member Charles "Corkey" Welch told Patch he believes the project will actually cost $5 million to $6 million over the initial budget.

"The latest project budget does not include the parking deck, community center renovations, restrooms for the park visitors, a traffic signal along Atlanta road and several other incidental items," Welch said. "These items were included in the first estimate of $6.5 million."
