Smyrna Mayor Rescinds Citywide Mask Mandate

The mask mandate is rescinded effective immediately, the city said Monday, citing declining infection rates and increasing vaccinations.

SMYRNA, GA — The city of Smyrna is ending its mask mandate effective immediately, Mayor Derek Norton announced Monday at 4 p.m.

Norton said the decreasing infection rates in Cobb County and increasing vaccination rates are the reasons for the decision. The mandate was first enacted last August, requiring masks in any public place "where other physical distancing measures may be difficult to maintain."

COVID-19 cases are currently 123 per 100,000 population in Cobb County for the past 14 days, which is .123 percent.

"Thank you to everyone for your diligence and cooperation throughout this unprecedented time," Norton said. "I am proud of our community, and look forward to getting back to normal, beginning with Food Truck Tuesdays May 11 and our first concert on the green June 12!"

The city will still follow all guidelines set forth by Gov. Brian Kemp's active executive orders.
