Smyrna Police Shooting Kills Man Accused Of Pointing Gun At Officers

The 26-year-old man was accused of advancing toward the officers while raising his gun at them in the area of Benson Poole, the GBI said.

SMYRNA, GA — A man who was shot Friday by Smyrna police officers died Saturday morning, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

The GBI identified the man as Marthely Theodore, 26, of Smyrna. Theodore was accused of pointing a gun at passing cars around 4:30 p.m. Friday near Benson Poole Road, the GBI said.

Cobb County Police asked Smyrna Police to help find Theodore, and when the Smyrna officers found him at the intersection of Benson Poole and Smyrna Powder Springs Road, the GBI said they repeatedly asked him to drop his gun.

Theodore was accused of advancing toward the officers while raising his gun toward them. The GBI said he was then shot by the Smyrna officers. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition; however, the GBI said he died Saturday.
