Here are the top three stories in Smyrna-Vinings today:
- Cobb County commissioners voted 4-1 to sell a 3.8-acre surplus lot in unincorporated Smyrna, previously a Pilot truck stop, to a multifamily housing developer. Commissioner Keli Gambrill was the sole opposition to the vote, citing concerns that the sale price was contingent upon the number of units to be built on the lot. The property, originally purchased for $12.97 million as part of a transportation project on the I-285 and Atlanta Road interchange, is zoned for commercial use; in the developer's contract, it could yield between 199 and 325 housing units. - Cobb County's Republican and Democratic parties have both scheduled their Independence Day celebrations. The Cobb County Republican Party will host a barbecue at their new Lawrence Street headquarters in Marietta; tickets for the GOP event, beginning right after the Marietta Let Freedom Ring Parade today (Tuesday, Jul. 4) are priced at $25. Meanwhile, the Cobb County Democrats have turned the annual Herb Butler Picnic into the Herb Butler Back-to-School Bash on Jul. 22; the event will include a student supply drive and take place at the Marietta Machinist Aerospace Union Hall. - Gas prices across Georgia have fallen significantly this week, with the average price of gasoline statewide dropping to $3.20 per gallon. Rates are similar in Cobb County, with an average price of $3.219. A representative from AAA-The Auto Group said low oil prices have kept gas rates relatively low, though high demand for gas has led to some volatility in rates. (Cobb County Courier)
