Smyrna City Council approves purchase of scooters for public safety officers.

SMYRNA, GA -- Police officers in Smyrna will soon get some new fancy wheels.

The City Council voted Wednesday evening to approve the purchase of two T3 Motion Patrollers, used by public safety officers in many municipalities to maneuver around crowded streets and sidewalks.

The scooters, which are similar to a Segway, will cost $27,234 for both of them, according to a council meeting agenda on Smyrna's website.

A primary manufacturer of the electronic vehicles is T3 Motion, a tactical technology company based out of Brea, California.

The multi-purpose vehicles are used by numerous police forces, including university officers on California State-Fullerton and the LAPD.

The city will buy the patrollers with more than $27,000 in forfeiture funds, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The measure was sponsored by Smyrna City Councilman Derek Norton. No word on when the city will buy the vehicles and introduce them on Smyrna streets.
