Fill in the Blank: What Should Go into the Boarded-Up Building in Downtown Austell?

Across the street from City Hall, facing the main artery of downtown Austell is a boarded-up building. What would you like to see there?

Certainly Austell residents and those who pass through Austell notice the the boarded-up space in a downtown Austell building which faces one of the city's major arteries, Veterans Memorial Highway, and is across the street from City Hall.

Mayor Joe Jerkins said the city has tried to cite the owner repeatedly and to condemn the building, but cannot find the owner.

"We've never written a citation," Jerkins said. "Every time we've tried to send something, it comes back."

In an effort to find the homeowners of abandoned homes and businesses, the city hired retired former Superior Court Judge Ken Nix, who specialized in real estate law as a lawyer.

Jerkins said Nix is working to find this business owner so that the city can move forward in condemning the space he owned in the downtown building.
