Train Wreck Kills 2 Austell Residents

The third victim is from Kennesaw.

Two Austell residents on their way to visit family in Toccoa were among the three people killed Friday night when an Amtrak train collided with their car, Stephens County coroner Christopher Stephens told WSB-TV this evening.

Erich Boecklbauer, 23, and Areale Leigh Nunn, 22, died in the crash, which occurred about 9:45 p.m. May 3.

That's when a northbound train T-boned a 2008 Mazda attempting to go through an unprotected railroad crossing that was marked only with a stop sign, Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The car was pushed 300 feet before it overturned, fell into a ravine and caught fire, Shirley said.

In addition to Boecklbauer and Nunn, Crystal Crews, 20, of Kennesaw, was also killed, the coroner told WSB-TV.

Despite WSB's report, a GSP spokesman said "the coroner is still trying to make positive identification at this time."

In an email to Patch, Shirley wrote: "We are awaiting positive identification from the crime lab through dental records. We have, I believe, the correct names but will not release pending those lab results."
