Commissioner Lee May Appointed As Presiding Officer of the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners

Commissioner Sharon Barnes-Sutton Appointed Deputy Presiding Officer

DECATUR - Commissioner Lee May was appointed as the Presiding Officer of the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners (BOC) on Jan. 8, 2013. As Presiding Officer, May will preside over all official BCO meetings, oversee committee appointments, manage the board’s meeting agendas and approve proclamation requests. Commissioner Sharon Barnes-Sutton will serve as deputy presiding officer.
   
“I am excited about serving as the Presiding Officer for the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners,” said Commissioner May. “We are at a pivotal and critical time in our county’s history that requires innovative ideas, strategic planning and an engaged leaders to move this county forward. My goal is to build upon the great leadership of Commissioner Larry Johnson’s tenure as Presiding Officer”

Previously, Commissioner May served four years as the Deputy Presiding Officer of the Board of Commissioners and two years as Chairman of the Budget & Finance Committee and a member on the Public Safety and General Safety Committee.  He has served in a leadership roles for three years with The National Association of Counties (NACo) to strengthen DeKalb County policies.

“I look forward to serving the citizens of DeKalb County as the Deputy Presiding Officer and working with all branches of government to make this the premiere county in the state of Georgia,” said Commissioner Barnes-Sutton. “Over the years I have served in various leadership capacities on the board and I look forward to adding my insight and perspective as we serve the people of DeKalb.”

Commissioner Barnes-Sutton previously served as the chairperson of the Public Safety Committee and General Government Committee.  She is responsible for creating the DeKalb Youth Leadership Academy Program designed to meet the needs of youth through educational enrichment, career training, recreational opportunities, community service and leadership development.
