Jones' body was covered by a blanket and his wrists were bound by shoelaces, DeKalb County police told the newspaper. His face was apparently stomped on, officers said, with injuries evidently so grotesque that officers had to ask Jones’ mother about any marks or scars on his body so that they could properly identify him, the AJC reports.
A witness told police that people were smoking crack cocaine in Jones' room before he died. The victim's sister said that her brother had long struggled with addiction and she wasn't surprised.
