Keyword Alerts Keep Tabs on DeKalb County Students
The new technology will monitor what students are typing into school computers.

New internet filters installed into the computers at DeKalb County Schools go beyond simply restricting what students can view and cannot view. The measures also monitor what they’re typing on classroom computers.
Search terms like “firearms,” “suicide,” or “explosives” will now generate an alert sent to the school principal and the IT department, where Internet activity is monitored, Gary Brantley Chief Information Officer of DeKalb Schools, told Fox 5 news in an interview.
During the school day, students aren’t allowed to bring in computer devices from home.

This filtering system doesn’t inhibit/won’t hinder a multi-media education, however. Teachers will still have the ability to override the firewalls that block sites like YouTube should they deem the material educational in their classroom.
