  1. Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services were called out to a house fire on Valley Brook Drive Tuesday evening and ended up saving three furry residents. The fire broke out around 7:45 p.m. and trapped the cats inside, and when the fire was put out, a search of the building found the cats. No residents were hurt in the fire, and the cats were rescued. The cause of the fire is under investigation. (Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch)
  2. The rail crossing on Highway 92 by Main Street is being repaired this week, and the eastbound side of 92 will be closed from Friday at 8 p.m. until Sunday at that crossing. The Georgia Department of Transportation will be detouring traffic through Cobb County via Canton, Piedmont and Sandy Plains roads. There are maps of the work zone and the detour traffic flow at the link. (Woodstock News Post)
  3. The Union Hill area is now under construction in several spots, and we can expect detours and slowdowns during the work. The construction of a roundabout started yesterday at the intersection of Union Hill Road (south) and Lower Union Hill Road, and the intersection will be closed until July 31. Old Jones Road and Union Hill Road (north) to Lower Union Hill Road will stay open with flaggers controlling the traffic, and the posted detour will bring you around the construction by way of Arbor Hill Road, Gaddis Road and East Cherokee Drive. In a separate project, work to widen the roadway will have Union Hill Road at Highway 20 detoured by way of East Cherokee Drive, and that construction will be going on for approximately 90 days. (Cherokee County Communications Division)
  4. If you've ever thought about purchasing a commemorative brick to honor a veteran, the next registration period through Woodstock Parks and Recreation opens up on Thursday. The department puts in an order for commemorative bricks twice a year, in May and November, and the next order is being sent out on Nov. 27. There is a 3-line limit for the engraving, with 14 characters (including spaces) on each line, and the finished brick will be placed around the fountain in The Park at City Center. With your purchase, you'll also get a map to show where your brick is located and a certificate, you have until Nov. 22 to make sure your brick is included in the next order. (Woodstock Parks and Recreation)
  5. The Cherokee County School District's summer meal program is about to start. Beginning on June 5, mobile "Cruisin' Cafe" busses will be stopping around the county to serve breakfast and lunch on weekdays this summer for children in the school district. There will also be two stationary sites, at Cherokee High School and Carmel Elementary School, where students can go to eat. The program is replacing the food pick-up held during COVID-19, and students must eat at the location each day instead of bringing the food home. You can find the schedule, menus and information here. If you find yourself in need, food is also available through MUST Ministries, First Baptist, Forever Fed, Never Alone and Timothy's Cupboard.
