Jehovah’s Witnesses Have Their Bible Meetings Twice Weekly in The Hawaiian Language
Jehovah’s Witnesses are one of the few religious organizations in Hawai'i that hold their meetings in the native Hawaiian language.

“People speak Hawaiian, so it’s important for the meetings to be held in the language that will reach their hearts,” says Darren Lunson, a member of the Alewa 'Olelo Hawai'i Congregation.

According to a State of Hawai'i census, there are over 18,000 Hawaiian language speakers in the islands. The popular language app Duolingo also has over 600,000 users who are currently learning Hawaiian.¹
“We preach to people of all languages but our congregation focuses on those who speak 'Olelo Hawai'i,” says Lunson.

“Learning Hawaiian makes me feel joyful. People in the community are impressed and surprised to see we are making the effort to teach the Bible in Hawaiian,” says Lunson.

The Alewa 'Olelo Hawai'i Congregation holds its meetings at 2055 Kamehameha IV Rd in the Kalihi area on Saturday mornings at 10 am and Tuesday evenings at 7 pm. Anyone who is interested in Hawaiian language Bible discourses and songs of worship is welcome to attend. Admission is free and no collections are taken.
