📰 News we're reading

1. Program highlights Hawaiian studies as essential for student identity (staradvertiser.com) — Families and teachers in Honolulu are rallying around Ho‘akea Honolulu, a hands-on Hawaiian studies and voyaging program that recently brought over 1,000 fourth graders to Mauliola (Sand Island). With Kaʻewai Elementary now lacking a Hawaiian studies teacher, educators say this Honolulu-based initiative is crucial for giving local kids cultural grounding, STEM skills, and a stronger sense of identity and place.

2. Himalayan Kitchen in Kaimuki shut down by DOH over refrigeration issues (kitv.com) — Health officials have temporarily closed Himalayan Kitchen in Kaimuki after inspectors found inadequate refrigeration and several other critical food safety violations, including moldy items and pest entry risks. The Honolulu restaurant on 11th Avenue must correct all cold-holding and sanitation issues before the Department of Health allows it to reopen or serve food at any location.

3. Honolulu mayor seeks Taiwan's help to rebuild crime-plagued Chinatown Cultural Plaza (hawaiinewsnow.com) — Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi is pressing Taiwan’s government to tear down and completely redevelop the deteriorating, crime-plagued Chinatown Cultural Plaza on Beretania Street. With most shops shuttered and conditions worsening, he’s proposing a new “Taiwan Cultural Plaza” as a revitalized cultural and commercial hub, but says he’s still waiting for a serious response from Taipei.

4. Japan's Foreign Ministry honors isle-based Nisei veterans groups (staradvertiser.com) — Honolulu’s Japanese consulate has honored three Hawaii-based Nisei veterans organizations for their role in World War II and postwar reconciliation between the U.S. and Japan. Local leaders and one 98-year-old MIS veteran attended the Honolulu ceremony, highlighting how these groups preserve history and strengthen ties between the two countries as the number of living veterans dwindles.

5. Lawmaker proposes ‘simple fix' to prevent damage from land title scams (hawaiinewsnow.com) — Honolulu residents should know state lawmakers are pursuing a “simple fix” to let the Bureau of Conveyances quickly void clearly forged property deeds, after scams involving Oahu homes exposed gaps in Hawaii’s title system. The proposal, tied to a broader crackdown on white-collar fraud and bitcoin-fueled scams, could make it easier for local homeowners to protect their properties and lock their land records from unauthorized changes.
