Happy Tuesday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know going on in town today.
Well, we approach the middle of August with a new week. Today, we look at a record-breaking Dolphin Dunk and cooling home prices. Another story takes on the issue of charter schools being one dimensional while one of Boise's first buildings is looking at some outdoor changes. Here are the top stories in Boise today:
- Staff of KTVB-TV were on hand for a record-breaking Great Dolphin Dunk. The event raised $41,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Ada County. (KTVB.com)
- The housing boom in Boise may be cooling just a bit. BoiseDev editor, Don Day, writes although the median price in Ada County continues to rise, the rate of pricing is slowing. Canyon County prices show a rare decline in prices. (BoiseDev)
- Idaho continues to see an explosion in charter schools in the state. Studies show charter students outperform other students, but minorities and poor students are underserved in the state's charter system. - You may have passed the building on the way to St. Luke's or possibly to a game at BSU. Driving by, the stone structure appears to be an old jail or possibly one of Boise's earlier homes. - Join Dondi Black and Golden Eagle Audubon for a Birding by Ear hike in Upper Hulls Gulch. Be prepared to hike up to 4 miles on mostly smooth single-track trail. This will be a slow paced hike focused on listening to and enjoying the birds. We will be hiking towards the sun but it will be intermittently shady and cool in the canyon. We will be hiking out and back on Hulls Gulch National Recreation Trail only a few miles from downtown Boise. The road to the trailhead can be washboardy so plan accordingly. Expect to see towhees, warblers, vireos, buntings, chats, meadowlarks and more! All levels are welcome. Group size will be small. Binoculars will be available if needed. All participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. No dogs please. There is a vault toilet at the trailhead. Trip leader: Dondi Black. Questions?
