📰 News we're reading

1. This group helps abuse survivors. Serious funding shortfall could force cuts (idahostatesman.com) — A Boise-based nonprofit that helps domestic and sexual violence survivors says a steep drop in year-end donations could force major cuts, including possibly closing its Meridian center. Faces of Hope, which runs a Boise location too, needs to raise $450,000 soon to keep free legal, safety, and emergency support available across the Treasure Valley.

2. A ‘village center' in Southwest Boise? P&Z approves plan for shops, public space (idahostatesman.com) — A major mixed-use “village center” with shops, public spaces, and 118 homes is moving forward in Southwest Boise after Planning and Zoning approved part of the Barnwood Village subdivision near the Boise Airport. The project is a key phase of CBH Homes’ Locale community, ultimately planning more than 1,000 housing units and long-requested neighborhood-scale businesses for the rapidly growing area.

3. Police say Boise School District interfered with sex-abuse investigations, court filings show (kivitv.com) — Boise Police testimony in a pending federal lawsuit alleges the Boise School District hindered some sex-abuse investigations, including a high-profile case at Fairmont Junior High. Court filings describe broader concerns across multiple Boise schools and a request to add the district’s former general counsel as a defendant, while the district has not yet publicly responded.

4. ‘Causing fear': ICE present at Boise Airport, Canyon County Courthouse (columbian.com) — Increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity at Boise Airport and the Canyon County Courthouse is alarming some local immigrants and advocates, who worry it will erode trust in law enforcement. Local attorneys report ICE agents waiting at the airport and courthouse, while Meridian Police recently assisted in an ICE-related car chase, raising questions about how and where enforcement is happening in the Boise area.

5. From prison to purpose: Rescue dogs, second chances (ktvb.com) — A Meridian-based rescue called Boise Bully Breed Rescue is partnering with the Idaho Department of Correction’s PAWS Program to give both incarcerated people and bully-breed dogs a fresh start. Former inmates now working as trainers are helping save dozens of dogs from euthanasia and offering affordable, mobile dog training across the Treasure Valley, giving local families more options to keep pets in their homes.
