Birthday Cake Inferno Caused By 80 Candles At IL Grandma's Party

HIGHLAND, IL — An Illinois family recently hosted a birthday party that almost proved too hot to handle.

A family in Highland presented a grandmother with a birthday cake topped with 80 flaming candles at the celebration, according to a video posted on YouTube by ABC News from Madison Noeltner via Storyful. Highland is in downstate Illinois, about a 40-minute drive from St. Louis.

“I don’t even know if this is safe,” the man presenting the fiery cake says at the start of the video.

The recording shows the birthday girl attempting in vain to blow out the candles as the flames leap high in the air.

“Help her out, somebody,” says a voice off-camera.

Despite frantic and repeated blowing from several people in attendance, the flames continue to burn dramatically, the video shows, until a person eventually places a disposable plate directly on top of the cake, successfully extinguishing the blaze.
