ILLINOIS — An 81-year-old suburban man was denied pretrial release over the weekend after authorities say he fatally shot his wife in their bed during an argument, then called 911 to report the crime.
Meanwhile, law enforcement officials are mourning after they say a 20-year veteran of the department was slain while on vacation overseas on Saturday.

Man, 81, Fatally Shot Wife In Bed During Argument: State's Attorney
According to prosecutors, Charles Witter called 911 just after 12:30 a.m., requesting police assistance and saying he had just shot his wife. Officials allege he retrieved a gun from a bedside table during an argument with his wife.
3 Dead In Single-Car Crash
When police arrived at the scene of the crash, they found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames, with the occupants still inside. Upon arrival, responding units extinguished the fire and located the three victims inside. All the victims were deceased. As of Monday, they had not yet been identified.
