'Early Taste Of Winter' On The Way: Snow, Cold Wind Chills This Weekend

The cold blast will ease by the middle of next week.

An "early taste of winter" is on the way to the Chicago area this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

While Friday will be fairly warm, with a high of 64 degrees; temperatures will turn chilly by Sunday. There is a chance of isolated showers on Friday night.

Rain on Saturday will mix with snow by early Sunday, the weather service said. There is also a chance of lake effect snow into Monday.

"Most areas won't see any snow accumulation, except near Lake Michigan," the weather service said on its Facebook. "The cold blast will ease by the middle of next week."

Sunday will have a high of 37 and Monday a high of 38. Wind chills on Sunday night could get as low as 8 degrees, according to the current forecast.

Periods of lake effect snow could develop near Lake Michigan on Sunday and Monday, the weather service said. Localized snow accumulation will make untreated roads slippery.


Here is a more detailed look at the weather this weekend, per the weather service:

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 61. West wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming north after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 15 mph.

SATURDAY: Rain, mainly after 3 p.m. High near 50. North northeast wind around 5 mph, with gusts as high as 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Rain before 3 a.m., then a chance of rain and snow. Low around 32. North northeast wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

SUNDAY: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly sunny, with a high near 35. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT: A 40 percent chance of snow. Partly cloudy, with a low around 24.
