1st Snowfall Of The Season: When It Starts, How Much Is Expected

Rates up to 1 inch of snow per hour are possible on Thursday morning.

ILLINOIS - The Chicago area will see the first snowflakes of the season, as snow is expected to begin Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain showers will begin Wednesday morning, and then "scattered to numerous rain/snow showers develop late afternoon through this evening," the weather service said on its Facebook.

Precipitation will then turn to widespread wet snow on Thursday morning, and could bring some slushy accumulations to the area. Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible, according to the weather service forecast.

The more substantial period of wet snow is expected from Thursday mid-morning into early afternoon, according to the weather service.

The wet snow will then switch over back to mainly rain on Thursday afternoon. Drivers should plan for slow and potentially slippery travel during the day on Thursday, the weather service said.

The high for Wednesday is 49, and the high for Thursday is 43 degrees.

Friday and Saturday look to be dry, with a high of 47 on Friday and a high of 46 on Saturday, according to the current forecast.
