Illinois State Trooper Injured In I-64 Shootout, Suspect Dies: Police

The trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shootout which took place after an altercation when the suspect pulled a gun.

MT. VERNON, IL — A suspect who exchanged fire with an Illinois State trooper on Interstate 64 is dead following the shootout that took place early Tuesday morning, police said.

Illinois State Police said that the shootout took place around 3 a.m. in Jefferson County near Mt. Vernon.

“During the incident, an altercation occurred, and the male suspect displayed a firearm,” the state police said in a news release. “Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and troopers.”

Police officials said that one trooper, a 16-year-veteran of the Illinois State Police, was injured in the shootout and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.”

Police said that the suspect died but gave no further details about the man’s identity. Police said that all lanes of I-64 were closed but reopened just before 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
