The man is accused of strangling his girlfriend and now faces more charges for fleeing and punching the decorated police dog, police said. The K9 tracked him down after police said he fled a hospital on foot.

Short-Staffed County Jail Deemed 'Insufficient' By Sheriff

The corrections division would have about 212 officers if it were fully staffed, the deputy chief said. Instead, when considering vacant positions and officers currently on leave, it is down to about 70 correctional officers. The sheriff's department is now housing detainees in a neighboring county.

I-55 Fatal, Chain Reaction Crash Kills Woman, 53: Coroner

The highway was shut down in both directions as snow fell Friday night. Police said the woman's vehicle was hit by a semi after traffic slowed down following an earlier crash and vehicle fire.
