Person Stabbed In Chest, Suspect Apprehended After Joliet Township Attack: Police

A 37-year-old man was apprehended hours after Will County Sheriff's deputies responded to a stabbing.

JOLIET TOWNSHIP, IL — Deputies responding to a report of a stabbing in Joliet Township found the victim drifting in and out of consciousness and discovered that the suspect had fled the home in the 100 block of Jessie Street.

According to police, deputies responded to the home at 7:42 p.m. after receiving an initial report that the suspect was still in the home and was armed. They quickly determined that the suspect, 37-year-old Justin M. Summlion of Joliet, had fled, and that the victim had been stabbed in the chest and the leg.

Deputies rendered lifesaving aid to the victim before paramedics from the East Joliet Fire Protection District arrived and took over, according to the sheriff's office. The victim was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, police said.

Deputies identified the suspect as Summlion and issued an alert via the Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network (ISPERN), notifying law enforcement agencies across the state to be on the lookout for him.

At 10:40 p.m., police said the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department found Summlion and apprehended him. He was then taken to the Will County Public Safety Complex, where he was interviewed by detectives.

Following the interview, police said Summlion was taken to the Will County jail on charges of domestic battery, aggravated domestic battery, being a felon in possession of a weapon, aggravated battery - great bodily harm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

"Sheriff Mike Kelley would like to thank the East Joliet Fire Protection District and the Livingston County Sheriff's Department for their quick and professional response," the sheriff's office said.

Will County jail records show an address for Summlion in the 1100 block of East Cass Street. He has a court date set for Tuesday.

In 2015, Patch reported that Summlion and another man had been arrested in connection with an armed robbery in Crest Hill. At the time, police said he and another man, both armed with handguns, approached a couple as they unloaded groceries and ordered them to get on the ground before taking the man’s wallet, the woman’s purse and iPad, and both of their cell phones.

According to Will County court records, Summlion pleaded guilty in 2017 to aggravated robbery, while several other charges, including several counts of armed robbery, were dropped. He received a sentence of eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, with credit for nearly 500 days served.
