Rain, Then Snow Possible For New Year's Eve In IL
The rainy start to New Year's Eve could transform into flurries as the new year approaches.
ILLINOIS — The rainy start to New Year's Eve could turn into snow as 2024 becomes 2025, according to the National Weather Service.
"It will be blustery and cold this evening, with scattered light snow showers and flurries possible," the weather service said.
The inclement weather, driven by 30-35 mph gusts of wind from the north, could change into wet snow north of Interstate 80 in northern Illinois on New Year's Eve. Snow is expected from late morning through the afternoon and early evening hours, though little to no accumulation is likely.

Wind chills between 15 and 25 degrees are expected between 10 p.m. and midnight.
The new year will get off to a cold start, with a chance of light snow possible south of I-80 late Thursday into Thursday evening. New Year's Day is forecast to be partly sunny with a high near 30 and winds around 15 mph.

New Year's Day will see a high between 27 and 31 degrees, and temperatures will continue to drop for a high between 26-32 degrees Thursday and 21-25 degrees Friday. Friday night could see a low of 8 degrees, the NWS forecast shows.
The sun will also shine to usher in the new year. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be partly sunny, and Friday and Saturday should see full sun, according to the NWS.
Going into the first full week of 2025, a chance of snow is possible from Sunday into Monday.
