Storms, Heat Index Near 100 Expected In IL: When Severe Weather Could Hit Chicago Area

Temperatures could reach the low 90s, with an even higher heat index.

ILLINOIS — The week ahead will feature temps in the 80s and a chance of severe weather on both Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday will have a high of 87, with a chance of isolated storms well west and south of Chicago, the weather service said. Severe weather is not expected.

However, there is an elevated thunderstorm risk on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Temperatures will reach into the 90s on Tuesday, with a heat index of 95 degrees, according to the current forecast.

"There will be periodic chances for thunderstorms Tuesday through Wednesday night, some may be severe," the weather service said on its Facebook.

The weather service said damaging wind and hail are the main threats with this severe weather, but the timing, coverage and strength of the storms is still uncertain.

"There is higher confidence in development of storms late Tuesday versus Wednesday," the weather service said. The weather service advised following trusted sources for weather information and reviewing your severe weather safety plan.

Thursday and Friday should be dry, although another warm-up in temps is expected for the weekend.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. South southeast wind around 5 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.

MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy, with a low around 68. South southeast wind around 5 mph, with gusts as high as 10 mph.

TUESDAY: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 90. Heat index values as high as 95. Southwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 68. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

WEDNESDAY: Showers and thunderstorms likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. South southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 63.

THURSDAY: Sunny, with a high near 83.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear, with a low around 63.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny, with a high near 84.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy, with a low around 70.
