ILLINOIS — Three police officers who originally responded to a report of a prowler were shot — one in the face — during a possible domestic incident.

Meanwhile, a suburban police chief said he feared "catastrophic injuries" when a truck crashed into a church, hitting the church's preschool room and injuring four children.

Plus, a community is mourning after a missing 21-year-old woman was found dead over the weekend.

Chief Says He Expected 'Catastrophic Injuries' When Truck Crashed Through Preschool Room

“When I drove up to the church, I was really expecting to see catastrophic injuries,” the police chief told Patch of the crash that injured four preschoolers at a suburban church on Friday. The crash happened weeks after a woman drove through an after-school program in central Illinois, he noted: "It was all everyone talked about. It's miraculous that no one was catastrophically injured."

3 IL Officers Shot — 1 In The Face — During Encounter With Armed Person: Police

Officers responded late Saturday for a report of a prowler near a home but, upon arrival, they made contact with the person and discovered the situation was a possible domestic incident, police said. During the encounter, the person opened fire and shot the officers, according to police. One officer was hit in the face, underwent emergency surgery and was in critical but stable condition, police said.

Body Of Missing Woman Found In Forest Preserve

The body of Reanna Hammad, 21, was discovered on a walking trail in a forest preserve, the forest preserve director confirmed. "This is one of the most difficult situations any family can experience, and mere speculation about the cause of death is a torment in itself, in addition to the loss," the family's mosque said.

High winds made it more challenging for firefighters to control a blaze that broke out in a suburban home Friday afternoon.

Off-Duty Cop Killed In Crash

Illinois State Police are investigating the crash that killed a suburban police supervisor. "Sergeant Weller, 47, was a highly respected and dedicated 20-year veteran," police said in a statement. "He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in July 2020, and most recently served in the department's Traffic Unit. Sgt. Weller was a decorated Officer whose commitment to service was recognized with numerous awards, including the Award for Heroism in 2015. He was a leader, a mentor, and a friend to many. Sgt. Weller is survived by his loving wife and three children."
