30 Days In Jail, Probation For Driver In Crash That Killed Passenger

The man was driving 114 mph when the crashed occurred in Harvard. A relative who was in the passenger seat in his car died.

A man was sentenced to 30 days in jail and probation for driving 114 mph and crashing his Mercedes into two trees in Harvard, killing his 29-year-old relative who was in the passenger seat.

Salman M. Hussain, 34, of the 8200 block of North Newland Avenue in Niles, was charged with one count of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle, a Class 3 felony.

Hussain accepted a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office on Wednesday and pleaded guilty, court records show.

McHenry County Judge Robert Wilbrandt sentenced Hussain to 30 days in the McHenry County jail and 18 months of probation.

The fatal crash happened around 7:25 p.m. August 11, 2019, in the 21200 block of Oak Grove Road in unincorporated Harvard.

Hussain was driving a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class eastbound on Oak Grove Road west of Route 14.

The Mercedes, which was traveling at approximately 114 mph, crossed over the westbound lane as Hussain lost control and drove off the north side of the roadway, according to court documents.

The Mercedes struck two trees and rolled onto its side. The passenger of the vehicle, Rayyan Hussain, 29, of Niles, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Salman Hussain was seriously injured and had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters. He was flown by a Mercyhealth REACT medical helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital – Riverside in Rockford.

Salman Hussain was ordered to pay $1,220 in court fees and fines and $5,000 in restitution to the owner of the property where he crashed. His probation is set to end on June 30, 2022, records show.
