Algonquin Families Can’t Afford Jackpot Justice
In Illinois' lawsuit lottery, the lawyers win — and the rest of us foot the bill.

Drive down Randall Road or Route 31 and you’ll see them — lawyer billboards promising easy money if you “call now.” But for Illinois families, the so-called Jackpot Justice system is no game.
A recent study found that lawsuit abuse costs every Illinoisan $1,919 a year. That’s nearly two thousand dollars that could be going toward groceries, gas, or school supplies — instead, it’s lost to higher prices and legal costs passed through our economy.
For example, I recently received a $38 check from a class-action lawsuit while the lawyers in the case took home $180 million. That may sound like a jackpot, but not for working families and small businesses in McHenry County who end up paying the bill.

It’s time to restore fairness to our civil justice system. Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week is a good reminder that we need reform — and a lot fewer lawyer billboards.
