Storms Swat South Side, Downing Wires And Trees, Funnel Cloud Seen Hovering Over 119th St

Over 200 downed trees reported in Beverly, Mt. Greenwood and Morgan Park, power knocked out in Merrionette Park, Alsip and Crestwood.

CHICAGO — Storms pummeled the South Side Thursday night fueled by record-breaking heat, downing trees, wires and knocking out power to the 19th Ward as well as the Alsip, Crestwood and Merrionette Park.

A resident’s photo of a funnel cloud hovering over 119th Street was posted on the Families of Alsip Facebook page. While there was some rotation, no tornado warnings were issued in the Chicago area.

Merrionette Park police and fire departments were busy Thursday, responding to multiple calls of downed wires and power outages.

Across Pulaski Road in the19th Ward, over 200 tree emergencies were reported in Beverly, Mount Greenwood and Morgan Park, Ald. Matt O’Shea (19th) said.

“We will continue to work with the Department of Streets and Sanitation (Bureau of Forestry) to address blocked streets and sidewalks,” O’Shea said in an email blast. “We ask that you contact 311 if you need to report a fallen tree/branch or damage from the storm.”

19th Ward residents can report tree damage by calling 3-1-1 or online at CHI311.

ComEd said more than 47,000 homes and businesses were without power after storms blew through the area. As of Friday evening, there were still 1,126 active outages.
