Krishnamoorthi Notches 5th Term In IL 8th District : NYT

Incumbent Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) retained his seat Tuesday in a race versus Republican challenger Mark Rice.

ILLINOIS — U.S. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL 8th), who was first elected in 2016, won a fifth term in the general election, according to the New York Times. His opponent, Republican Mark Rice, was seeking the two-year seat for the first time. In April's primaries, both candidates ran unopposed.

Krishnamoorthi — 56.3 percent (163,722 votes)
Rice — 43.7 percent (127,136 votes)

The Illinois' 8th Congressional District covers parts of Cook County, DuPage County and Kane County. All or parts of Addison, Barrington Hills, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Elgin, Elk Grove Village, Glendale Heights, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Lombard, Palatine, Roselle, Schaumburg, South Elgin, Streamwood, Villa Park and Wood Dale are included.

The last Republican to win the seat was Joe Walsh, who was elected in 2010, but only served one term.

After winning the prior three elections by gaining more than 70 percent of the vote, Krishnamoorthi had a closer race against Republican challenger Chris Dargis, 57-43 percent, in 2022.

Krishnamoorthi, 51, currently serves as the ranking member of the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Residing in Schaumburg, Krishnamoorthi was born in New Delhi, India, and raised in Peoria. He is the first ever Indian-American or person of South Asian descent to serve as Ranking Member or Chair of any full committee in the U.S. Congress. He also serves as an assistant whip.

54th District Illinois House of Representatives

Incumbent Mary Beth Canty (D-Arlington Heights) won reelection Tuesday night, according to New York Times. She faced a challenge from Republican Michele Hunter. Neither candidate had an opponent in April's primaries.

Canty — 58 percent
Hunter — 42 percent

The race marked a rematch between Canty, a former member of the Arlington Heights Village Board, and Hunter, from 2022. District 54 includes Arlington Heights and parts of Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights and Palatine.

53rd District Illinois House of Representatives

Nicolle Grasse (D-Arlington Heights) won Tuesday night, according to New York Times. She squared off on Election Day with Republican Ronald Andermann.

Andermann — 44 percent
Grasse — 56 percent

Grasse, who had been a member of the Arlington Heights Village Board since 2021, stepped into the seat in July to fill Mark Walker's vacated seat of Mark Walker. Walker became a state senator for the 27th District following Ann Gillespie's appointment as acting director of the Department of Insurance by JB Pritzker in April.

"Rain didn't stop the all day encounters and connections with voters, supporters, family and friends," Grasse said in a social media post prior to polls closing. "Your calls, visits, texts and posts have filled my heart and I thank you. We are in this together for each other and for all of us. Thank you."

The 53rd District comprises Arlington Heights, Rolling Meadows and Mount Prospect.
