'Unconscious' Driver Dies As Car Crashes Into Fire Hydrant: Elk Grove Village PD

Two witnesses told police the 51-year-old appeared unconscious prior to driving off the road and crashing in a single-car accident.

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL — A 51-year-old Schaumburg man, who died Tuesday in a single-car crash, may have been unconscious prior to the incident. Paul Klein was pronounced dead after being taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center.

The Elk Grove Village police and fire departments responded to the incident at around 11:52 a.m. Tuesday, on Biesterfield Road. Klein, who was the sole occupant of his 2008 silver Pontiac Vibe, was traveling eastbound on Biesterfield from Meacham Road. Police said his car veered into the westbound lanes and struck a fire hydrant on the north parkway.

Emergency personnel found Klein unresponsive at the scene and took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:26 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. A cause of death had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon.

Police said at least two independent witnesses told them Klein appeared unconscious prior to the crash. The crash remains under investigation.

The westbound lane of Biesterfield Road was closed at Columbia Court for nearly two hours.
