Viral TikTok Trend Startles Homeowners, Causes Property Damage: Arlington Heights PD

Police responded to a number of reports last weekend about the "Door Kick Challenge," which has been occurring in communities nationwide.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Stressing it is "not funny," the Arlington Heights Police Department is condemning a viral TikTok trend that has recently made its way locally. Known as the "Door Kick Challenge," participants, often teenagers and children, kick and pound on residential doors before running away.

Over the weekend, Arlington Heights police responded to several homes where residents had reported their front doors had been kicked. The trend can startle homeowners and cause property damage, according to police.

The challenge has been described by some as a spin on the old school "ding-dong ditch" prank. Similar incidents have been reported in communities nationwide. Patch reported on the trend occurring in California and Pennsylvania over the summer. There have also been incidents this year in Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

"We encourage everyone, especially parents, to understand the dangers and discuss with their children the various consequences of participating in this trend," AHPD said in a community safety alert. "Startling a homeowner in the overnight hours and/or damaging property is not funny. We should all agree everyone's safety is more important than views/likes."

In August, the Village of Sleepy Hollow in Kane County said residents were expressing "alarm and frustration" with incidents occurring at a number of homes.

"Our goal is accountability and restoration, rather than maximum punishment for youthful mistakes," Village President Courtney Boe said in a message to the community seeking those responsible to come forward. "But make no mistake: this is not the harmless 'ding-dong ditch' of past generations. An aggressive door kick can cause serious injury or provoke dangerous misunderstandings in today’s divided climate with grievous consequences."
