AURORA, IL — SafeWise, a security product review platform, looked at crime statistics for communities in the state to compile its 11th annual Safest Cities report. Among the 234 cities that met the criteria for the new SafeWise study, where did Aurora land?

The platform ranked the city in 158th place. When it comes to violent crime, Aurora has 3.1 violent crimes for every 1,000 residents and 11.27 property crimes per 1,000 residents, SafeWise reported. Violent crime constitutes aggravated assault, murder, sexual assault and robbery, whereas burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft are considered property crimes.

How did nearby towns compare? Oswego came in 62nd, Naperville in 77th and Batavia in 97th.

The platform named Campton Hills, about 15 miles north of Aurora, the safest city in Illinois for the second consecutive year. The village has not reported any violent or property crimes so far this year, SafeWise said.

Concerns about gun violence continue to be a problem in Illinois, especially considering that in 2024, the state had the most mass shootings in the country, according to SafeWise. But despite locals' concerns, fewer Illinois residents experienced violent crimes in the 8 months prior to the survey compared to the previous year — dropping from 23 percent to 14 percent year over year.

Every safest city in Illinois named by SafeWise reported fewer than one violent crime per 1,000 people, and none have had more than 5.5 property crimes per 1,000 people.

The SafeWise report is based on voluntary, self-reported information that cities and jurisdictions across the country report through the FBI Summary Reporting System (SRS) and National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). For the 2025 reporting year, the most recent FBI data was released in October 2024 for crimes reported in 2023.
