Aurora Animal Shelter Waives Adoption Fees For Veterans Under New Program
The program aims to help veterans looking "to experience the joy and healing that comes with having a furry friend," the city said.
AURORA, IL — The City of Aurora's Animal Care and Control Division is waiving adoption fees for veterans through a new program that launched in time for Veterans Day.
Through the Pets for Vets program, all fees are waived for one cat or dog every two years for Illinois veterans.
The program is meant to provide emotional support, reduce stress and eliminate financial barriers for veterans looking "to experience the joy and healing that comes with having a furry friend," city officials said.

To qualify for the program, veterans must present a valid driver's license or state ID with "veteran" printed on it. A federally issued veteran ID card, a DD214 Certificate of Release, or Discharge from Active Duty paperwork should be presented along with the ID. From there, veterans will go through the shelter's standard adoption process to find their match.
"For veterans who have faced challenges or trauma, a loyal companion can provide unconditional love, reduce stress, and bring a renewed sense of purpose," Animal Control Manager Kameron DeBoer said in a statement. "At Aurora Animal Care and Control, we’re proud to give back to those who have served by helping them experience the joy of adoption while also giving shelter pets the chance to become heroes in their own way."
