Aurora Students At 2 Schools Win IHSA State Champs, Get City Holiday

A student at Oswego East High School and 29 at Marmion Academy were honored with a holiday in Aurora after winning state titles.

OSWEGO, IL — Two Aurora schools clinched Illinois High School Association state championship awards

Marmion Academy's wrestling team won the Class 3A State Championship for the first time in school history. At Oswego East High School, senior Chase Maier took home two State Championship titles, winning the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard swimming competitions.

During Tuesday night's City Council meeting, Mayor Richard Irvin honored the teams' historic runs with holidays in Aurora, proclaiming March 1 as Marmion Academy Wrestling Day and Chase Maier Day.

Irvin presented each of the 30 student-athletes, including Maier and 29 others from Marmion Academy, with trophies, medals and certificates before reading their proclamations.

"It is my absolute honor to read this proclamation. ... [The] wrestling team has had a stellar 2024-2025 season," Irvin said.

"When we have state champs, we gotta let them know we care," Irvin said before presenting Maier with his plaque and proclamation.

Maier will pursue a degree in engineering, and "he'll go from swimming in the water to serving his country on the water as part of the United States Navy," Director of Communications Clayton Muhammad said at the meeting.
