Teen Punches, Slaps 71-Year-Old Woman In Attempted Murder: Sheriff

The teen, a resident of Waterman, is facing attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery charges after the incident in Big Rock.

BIG ROCK, IL — A teenager threatened to kill a family member while punching, slapping and kicking her May 31 in her Big Rock Township home, according to the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

Koda Uebel, 18, was taken into custody and charged with attempted first-degree murder in addition to five other felonies and four misdemeanors after the deputies responded at 12:06 a.m. to the residence on Lincoln Avenue.

Deputies were dispatched to the house for a report of a domestic disturbance in progress between two family members. Upon arriving, first responders witnessed through a locked door a man actively striking a woman, according to a Monday news release.

After forcing entry "due to the immediate threat to life," deputies intervened to help the woman, 71, and Uebel attacked them, officials said. A deputy tased the teenager, but he remained "combative" and bit and injured one of the deputies.

The victim was transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital with serious injuries. She remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to a Monday news release. Officials said no additional information is available on the extent of her injuries.

Uebel and the injured deputy were both taken to Delnor Hospital for evaluation and treatment; both were medically cleared, officials said.

Uebel, of the 9000 block of Chicago Road in Waterman, was released into the custody of the Kane County Sheriff's Office and charged with the following:

  • Attempted first-degree murder — intent death or great bodily harm, a felony
  • Aggravated domestic battery, a felony
  • Aggravated domestic battery — strangulation, a felony
  • Aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to a person 60 years or older, a felony
  • Two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer, a felony
  • Domestic battery — physical contact, a misdemeanor
  • Domestic battery — bodily harm, a misdemeanor
  • Resisting a peace officer, a misdemeanor
  • Possession/consumption of alcohol by a minor, a misdemeanor

Uebel remains in custody at the Kane County jail. His pretrial release detention hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 5.
