Batavia Cooling Center Activated Amid Excessive Heat

The hottest air of the summer is expected over the next few days, according to the National Weather Service.

BATAVIA, IL — As excessive temperatures hit northern Illinois to start the week, Batavia is activating its cooling center, officials said.

The hottest air of the summer is expected over the next few days, according to the National Weather Service. A heat advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Monday, and an excessive heat watch is issued for Tuesday afternoon and evening in Kane County.

The weather service said heat index values of 105 to 109 are expected Monday in the area, and 110 to 115 is possible on Tuesday.

There is also a severe weather threat on Tuesday, with about a 20 to 30 percent chance for storms, according to the weather service.

In Batavia, the elderly, families with small children, and other vulnerable residents are encouraged to use City Hall, 100 N. Island Ave., as a temporary cooling center as needed.

While the cooling center will be open 24 hours a day, the city isn't able to provide sleeping accommodations, dedicated hygiene or washing facilities, or refrigerators for food storage.

Visitors should check in at the front desk of the Batavia Police Department upon arrival. Anyone with questions about the cooling center should call police at 630-454-2500.
