The Batavia Public Works Department's street division is responsible for clearing snow and controlling ice on 117 miles of streets, 168 cul-de-sacs, two cemeteries, 14 city-owned parking lots and downtown sidewalks. Crews start by plowing primary streets to bare pavement, followed by clearing secondary streets at the end of the snowfall once primary streets are finished.
Courts and cul-de-sacs will be plowed third — the clearing generally takes place during the day after the snow has stopped. Officials said these roads can take up to eight times longer to plow than a similarly sized through street.
