UPDATE: 5-Year-Old Killed in Kane County Crash on Route 72 and Big Timber Road
The multi-vehicle crash occurred Friday afternoon.

A 5-year-old girl died Friday afternoon from injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle crash, Kane County Sheriff’s Police reported. The child was in a car seat in the backseat of a vehicle with her father, James Horvath, 45, of Hampshire. James Horvath remains at Sherman Hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries.
Gabrielle Horvath, 5, of Hampshire was pronounced deceased at Sherman Hospital.
Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a multi-vehicle traffic crash with injuries at 3:15 p.m. Feb. 20. The crash was on Rt. 72, near the intersection of Big Timber Rd., in unincorporated Rutland Township.

The initial investigation indicates that a Mercedes C320 was traveling east on Rt. 72 approximately 1/3 of a mile east of Big Timber Road. Approaching a curve in the road, the driver lost control of the vehicle and entered the westbound lane of traffic. He then struck head on a Toyota FJ Cruiser that was traveling west on Rt. 72. A third vehicle, a Chevy Chrome, was traveling behind the Toyota and struck the rear of the Toyota, a written release states. Police reported the driver of the Mercedes was also transported to Sherman Hospital in Elgin and is being treated for his injuries. The driver of the Chevy Chrome was treated and released at the scene.
The driver and sole occupant of the Chevy Chrome was David Doyle, 39, of Byron.

Police reported the driver of the Mercedes, a 17 year old juvenile male from Carpentersville, has been issued a citation for driving in the wrong lane. Members of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are continuing to investigate this crash. Detectives have not determined whether drugs, alcohol, texting or excessive speed played a role in the crash.
