National Drug Take-Back Day Event Coming To Batavia

BATAVIA, IL — The Batavia Police Department is teaming up with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency to collect unwanted and expired prescription medication as part of National Drug Take-Back Day on Oct. 26.

The free and anonymous event will last from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the main lobby at the police headquarters, 100 N. Island Ave. National Drug Take-Back Day happens twice each year, first in April and again in October.

The collection helps prevent medications from being flushed down the toilet and ending up in the local drinking water supply.

Here's a look at some of the items that will be accepted:

• Prescription medications
• Medication samples
• Over-the-counter medications
• Vitamins
• Pet medications
• Non-controlled DEA drugs

Ointments, illegal substances and narcotics, thermometers, IV bags, sharps and needles, bloody or infectious waste, and empty containers will not be accepted.

Pills should be removed from their original container and poured into a plastic bag. Pills in blister packs can remain in the plastic but should be taken out of their boxes.

Officials said liquids will only be collected if they're properly sealed in their original container. Packages shouldn't contain any personal information.
