New Chief Operating Officer Appointed At Fermilab

Before Fermilab, Greg Stephens has served at 11 of the United States' 17 national laboratories, officials said.

BATAVIA, IL — A new chief operating officer has been appointed at Fermilab, the United States Department of Energy's particle physics and accelerator laboratory in Bataiva, officials announced Monday.

Greg Stephens, who brings more than 35 years of experience in commercial, academic, international and U.S. government operations to Fermilab, officially began the new role on Monday. He has served at 11 of the United States' 17 national laboratories, officials said.

"I am excited and honored to join the Fermilab team, the premier particle physics laboratory in the U.S.," Stephens said. "I look forward to collaborating with the talented Fermilab employees to drive innovation and continue the excellent scientific research. I believe there is an exciting future at Fermilab and look forward to bringing my passion and expertise to this team as we capture the opportunities ahead."

Stephens most recently worked as vice president of Amentum's Technical Services, where he led a staff that delivered operations, engineering, maintenance, safety, quality assurance, risk assessment, business and project optimization, and management services, according to a news release.

The new chief operating officer at Fermilab holds a degree in electrical engineering from Clemson University. He began his career in the Engineering Services Division at DuPont de Nemours, Inc. He has been involved in various efforts in Aiken, South Carolina, including serving on the Board of Directors for Helping Hands of Aiken and the United Way of Aiken County and has also been on the Engineering Advisory Board for the University of South Carolina at Aiken.

"We are delighted to have Greg Stephens join Fermilab in leading the operation of the lab," Fermilab Director Lia Merminga said in a statement. "His extensive experience, including at many of the national laboratories, and leadership roles, will be a huge asset in his leadership of our laboratory operations toward the safe, secure, efficient and effective execution of our mission."
