Water Street Reopens After Wastewater Treatment Facility Work

Major utility work along Water Street is complete, but officials say some detours along the Fox River Trail are still required.

BATAVIA, IL — Water Street has reopened to pedestrians, bicyclists and cars following work on the Wastewater Treatment Facility, officials at the Batavia Chamber of Commerce said Tuesday.

The City of Batavia received $38 million from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to upgrade its facility, located at 400 Shumway Ave., officials said in August 2023.

Although the major utility work along Water Street between Main Street and the dead-end south of Union Avenue is complete, detours are still required for the Fox River Trail around the treatment facility, officials said.

The Chamber provided the following detour for people approaching from the south on the west side of the Fox River Trail: At the intersection of the trail with Union Street, users should head west to the Union and Water streets intersection, turn north on Water Street to First Street, go east on First Street to Shumway Avenue and finally head south to pick up the trail to the east.

Trail users approaching from the north have several detour options and can follow the posted signs, officials said.

The section of the Fox River Trail that was closed to accommodate treatment facility upgrades will be rerouted in the fall to a path along Pamarco Drive.
