Michigan author Breeda Kelly Miller has created a live love letter to her late mother in her new one-woman play, “Mrs. Kelly’s Journey Home", a touching theatrical tribute in which Miller portrays her mom, Mary Kelly, through Mrs. Kelly’s immigration from Ireland to America, matriarchal role raising her family, and debilitating struggle with dementia late in life.

Directed by Brian Cox, “Mrs. Kelly’s Journey Home” was named winner of the Wilde Award for the best one-person show of 2021-22 by EncoreMichigan, Michigan’s leading theater news organization. “Breeda Kelly Miller brings to life a funny and often profound look at her mother's journey from her native Ireland through the end of her life, charting the type of experiences felt by generationsof immigrants and adults caring for their aged parents. This is a theatrical memoir filled withhumor and poignant moments, with Breeda performing each role, introducing us to her parents, their families, and friends. Mrs. Kelly's Journey Home will keep audiences riveted from theopening line to the closing blessing. It is a moving, joyous exploration of love, roots, and family.”

After caring for her mother for six years throughout her dementia diagnosis until her death in
2011, Miller became a nationally known speaker, raising awareness and supporting the
importance of self-care for caregivers. She is the author of the book, “The Caregiver
Coffeebreak,” a skilled storyteller whose “Ticket to Heaven” tale was on NPR’s “The Moth Radio
Hour”.
